This six-week programme leads to the EAL Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Rail Engineering Track Renewals and combines structured learning with practical rail engineering activities.
The programme is designed to support progression towards employment or further specialist rail training, including progression to Rail Engineering Skills Bootcamps.

About the Course
The Level 1 Track Renewals programme introduces the practical skills and behaviours required within rail engineering and permanent-way environments.
Rail is a safety-critical industry. Throughout the course, you'll learn how to prepare for work safely, follow instructions and authorised systems of work, use tools and equipment appropriately, work effectively with others and contribute to track-renewal activities.
The six-week programme combines classroom learning, assessment and practical workplace activity, allowing you to develop and demonstrate your skills while building evidence towards the Level 1 qualification.
What Will I Learn
During the programme, you'll develop knowledge and practical skills covering:
- Preparing safely to undertake rail engineering duties
- Health, safety and workplace responsibilities
- PPE, hazards, risk controls and safe systems of work
- Rail infrastructure and permanent-way components
- Preparing small plant, equipment and tools
- Safe use, inspection and care of tools and equipment
- Dismantling and removing permanent-way assets and components
- Installing new or serviceable permanent-way assets
- Rails, sleepers, joints and associated fastenings
- Interpreting work instructions, diagrams and specifications
- Quality checks and identifying defects
- Workplace communication and teamwork
- Housekeeping and worksite reinstatement
- Waste segregation and safe disposal
- Reporting problems and working within your authority
- Building and completing your qualification portfolio
Practical activities are integrated throughout the six-week programme, providing opportunities to demonstrate skills in realistic working environments.
Is This Course for Me
This programme is designed for adults who want to develop the foundation skills required for employment within rail engineering, track renewals or related infrastructure occupations.
It is particularly suited to people who are unemployed and looking to develop occupational skills directly relevant to employment opportunities.
You do not need to be an experienced rail worker, but you should be prepared for practical learning, able to follow safety instructions and committed to completing the programme and progressing towards employment or further training.

Funding and Eligibility
The course is funded through the Greater Lincolnshire Adult Skills Fund for eligible learners.
Eligibility will be checked before enrolment. Learners must be aged 19 or over within the relevant funding year and meet the applicable Greater Lincolnshire residency and funding requirements.
Our programme is designed to support unemployed learners. Eligible unemployed learners and those meeting the applicable earnings threshold can be fully funded; other circumstances may be subject to co-funding rules.
