About the Course

The Rail Engineering and Depot Maintenance programme introduces the knowledge, practical skills and working practices used within rail engineering environments.

Rail engineering is a safety-critical industry, so the programme combines engineering knowledge with a strong focus on health and safety, safe systems of work, practical competence and professional workplace behaviours.

Learning is designed to provide practical exposure to railway engineering and maintenance environments while helping you understand the different career and progression opportunities available within the sector.

The programme has a strong practical and progression focus rather than being a generic employability course.

What Will I Learn?

During the programme, you’ll develop knowledge and practical skills in areas including:

  • Rail engineering fundamentals and industry terminology
  • Health, safety and safe systems of work
  • Rail infrastructure and track components
  • Engineering tools, equipment and materials
  • Track maintenance, patrol and inspection principles
  • Engineering measurement and recording
  • Fault and defect identification
  • Switches and crossings
  • Mechanical engineering principles
  • Continuous welded rail principles
  • Digital engineering and modern methods
  • Depot and workshop operations
  • Locomotive and carriage maintenance environments
  • Environmental sustainability

The current curriculum progresses from rail engineering fundamentals and safe systems through tools and equipment, track maintenance, inspection, mechanical engineering, digital engineering and depot/workshop practice, before concluding with assessment, employability and progression planning.

Developing Rail Engineering Competence

The programme is designed to do more than introduce you to the rail industry. Practical activities and assessments allow you to build evidence of the knowledge and competencies you develop throughout your training.

The programme model includes development in areas such as:

  • Rail Engineering Fundamentals
  • Safe Systems of Work in Rail Engineering
  • Track Patroller Competence
  • Continuous Welded Rail principles
  • Inspection of Switches & Crossings
  • Engineering tool competence
  • Railway Depot Maintenance Awareness
  • Digital Recording Awareness

These areas contribute towards a Railway Engineering Competency Passport, providing a structured record of the skills and competencies developed during the programme.

Is This Course for Me?

The programme is designed for adults aged 19+ who are interested in developing skills for rail engineering, maintenance, infrastructure, manufacturing or related technical careers.

It may be suitable if you are:

  • Unemployed and looking to move into a practical or technical career
  • Economically inactive and ready to progress into vocational or technical training
  • Considering a career change into rail or engineering
  • Already working within rail or engineering and looking to develop your skills
  • Involved in a heritage railway as a member of staff or volunteer
  • Interested in practical engineering, maintenance or mechanical work
  • Bringing transferable experience from automotive, construction, manufacturing, fabrication, restoration or similar industries

Where Could This Course Take Me?

The programme is designed as a progression pathway rather than simply a short training course.

Depending on your starting point, experience and career goals, completing the programme could support progression towards:

  • Entry-level rail engineering and infrastructure opportunities
  • Track and permanent way environments
  • Railway depot and workshop roles
  • Engineering and maintenance opportunities
  • Heritage railway engineering
  • Advanced manufacturing and related technical roles
  • Rail or engineering apprenticeships
  • Further technical qualifications and training
  • Progression within an existing rail or engineering role

Am I Eligible?

To be considered for fully funded training, you will normally need to:

  • Be aged 19 or over
  • Live within York or North Yorkshire
  • Meet the relevant Adult Skills Fund residency requirements
  • Be able to undertake and benefit from the programme
